Atlas mountains, Morocco
The Atlas is North Africa’s highest mountain range, known to the local Berbers as Idraren Draren—“Mountains of Mountains.” The High Atlas runs diagonally across Morocco for nearly 1,000 km, encircling Marrakesh to the south and east, stretching from the Atlantic coast just north of Agadir to Khenifra in the northeast. The Berbers, the original inhabitants of these ranges, proudly call themselves Amazigh—“free people” or “noble men.” Their history as an indigenous people of western North Africa goes back at least to 10,000 BC. I traveled the Atlas Mountains by bike and on foot for weeks, crossing beautiful rivers and valleys, passing through colorful villages, and meeting warm, hospitable people. The memories of these journeys stayed with me long after they ended.
