The Okavango Delta in Botswana is a rare inland delta, where the Okavango River fans out into the sands of the Kalahari Desert, creating a rich and diverse ecosystem. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to elephants, lions, and countless bird species. Shaped by seasonal floods, its landscape forms a mosaic of islands, lagoons, and reed-lined channels, supporting one of Africa’s most distinctive wilderness areas. Beyond the Delta, Botswana is also defined by the arid expanses of the Kalahari Desert—with its open grasslands and resilient wildlife—and the Chobe region, renowned for its riverfront and vast elephant herds. We spent many weeks walking and driving along the wilderness trails of the Okavango and other national parks of Botswana—immersed in nature, among the animals, brief guests in their private world. It was a sensory experience unlike any other.
