Galapagos Islands
Situated in the Pacific Ocean some 1,000 km west of the South American continent, these 19 islands and the surrounding marine reserve have been called a unique ‘living museum and showcase of evolution’. Ongoing seismic and volcanic activity reflects the processes that formed the islands. These processes, together with the extreme isolation of the islands, led to the development of unusual animal life. These include the land iguana, the giant tortoise and the many types of finch that inspired Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, following his visit in 1835. These islands are heaven for wildlife photographers. I have visited the Galapagos twice, and I remember deeply the intoxication of my senses while being there. The local species usually ignore your presence, hence allowing you to truly observe the wildlife that is still intact in most of the islands. I tried hard to follow the local slogan “Take only photos, leave only footprints”.
