Greenland is the world’s largest island, located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Its area is roughly the size of all the countries of Western Europe combined. Nearly 80% of Greenland’s landmass is covered by an ice sheet that stretches across more than 1.7 million square kilometers. Ice from the interior flows outward through a network of glaciers and ice streams, many of which reach the ocean, some forming dramatic glacial tongues. The majority of Greenland’s residents are Inuit, whose ancestors migrated from Alaska through northern Canada, gradually settling across the island by the 13th century. For decades, Greenland’s striking landscapes have attracted adventurous explorers. Towering mountains, massive glaciers, ice-filled fjords, diverse flora and fauna, pristine wilderness, and profound silence offer a truly unique Arctic experience. The air is so clear that mountains can often be seen from 75–200 km away. Days can pass in the wild without encountering another person. I spent 10 days trekking through Greenland’s wilderness, starting from the ice cap northeast of Kangerlussuaq and crossing through beautiful mountains and lakes north of the Kangerlussuaq fjord. Carrying everything I needed in my backpack, I immersed myself in the isolation and untouched nature, which filled me with a powerful sense of self-discovery and excitement. It was a physically demanding and challenging journey—but one that was absolutely worth the effort.
