Madagascar is the world’s fourth-largest island, and it is truly unique: about 5% of all known animal and plant species exist only here. Its signature animal is, of course, the lemur, but the island is also home to countless other remarkable creatures and plants—baobabs, insects, sharks, frogs, orchids, palms, birds, turtles, and mongoose, to name just a few. Much of this extraordinary biodiversity is under severe threat from climate change and population pressure. This gives every journey to Madagascar not only a sense of urgency but also a sense of purpose—tourism can indeed be a force for good. During my travels across the island, I felt both exhilarating wonder and deep sadness. Madagascar’s wildlife is utterly unique, yet you can clearly see, with your own eyes, the speed at which it is vanishing. We must find better ways to preserve this place, for what disappears from Madagascar exists nowhere else on Earth.
