Montenegro is a Balkan country on the Adriatic Sea. It shares borders with Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina to the north, Serbia to the northeast, Kosovo to the east, and Albania to the south. To its west lies the Adriatic coast. The country’s terrain varies dramatically—from high mountains, through the karst landscapes of the western Balkans, to a narrow coastal plain only one to four miles wide. The mountains are majestic, and the local people I met there were truly remarkable.
